With the continuing fight among House Republicans over who will be the next Speaker, U.S. Sen. Pete Ricketts says his discussions with the Nebraska House delegation have pretty much been limited to wishing them luck.
Asked about the subject during a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Ricketts said it’s truly an issue that needs to be settled by House members alone, but he hopes a new Speaker can be named as soon as possible.
“We’ve got a lot of important business we need to take care of, not the least of which is getting a budget passed before the Nov. 17 deadline, where the continuing resolution runs out,” said Ricketts. “But again, this is how democracies work. It can be an untidy process, (and) this is part of what it means to be self-governing. You don’t see this in dictatorships, because they don’t allow this sort of disagreement to happen, and this is how we work our way through it.”
Ricketts says since selection of a Speaker is the exclusive business of House members, they really don’t want members of the Senate weighing in on it.
