The Western Community College Area Board of Governors were updated this week on the new strategic plan for the future of WNCC.

Interim President John Marrin reviewed ‘Re-envisioning WNCC’ for the Board Wednesday, laying out the vision, mission and values that will be guiding the institution through the end of 2027.

Marrin said there are four goals re-envisioning what constitutes student success, academic excellence, community partnerships and institutional vitality. “What we wanted was a roadmap for the future, a way of measuring what works and what doesn’t work, our metrics, key performance indicators, a purpose for the work we do and goals to achieve and excel, a focus, (and) a guide for allocation of resources,” said Marrin. “From this point forward, when we put together a budget, it’s going to fall in line with our strategic plan, and a model of continuous improvement.”

Kim Reichert, Special Projects Director in the President’s Office, said the document won’t be truly complete until five years down the road, as it’s something akin to the accreditation process.

“This is a living, breathing document. We have a major shift about to come to us in July with a new President. A smart President is going to take a look at this strategic plan, but there are inevitably going to be some additions, or maybe something will fall out. That’s the course corrections piece of this, maybe we were just wrong, and maybe something will change,” said Reichert. “Every President will want to make his or her mark, and they’ll have ideas. So, it’s meant to be a guide, but there needs to be some flexibility in it.”

A response tour sharing the new plan and how it will affect Panhandle communities will get underway in mid-February, with stops anticipated in each county served in the Western Community College area.
