Repair work to the northbound eastern span of the 10th Street/Broadway North Platte River bridge is slated to begin next week after county commissioners approved the project at their most recent meeting.

Monday of last week, the Scotts Bluff County Board awarded the contract to Garcia Chicoine Enterprises of Milford, Nebraska, with a bid of nearly $147,000.

Road and Bridge Superintendent Steve Baird explained the bidding process that generated five bids, as well as the scope of work. “We bid this one out in hopes maybe we could piggy-back the contractor that got the award for the west (southbound) bridge for this one and get a good price,” said Baird. “This one does not need the extensive work the other one does. It’s going to be repairing some small concrete patches, potholes, and repairing the joints of the bridge.”

The engineer’s estimate for the work was slightly more than $128,000, and the bids ranged from the lowest with the winning contractor to more than $300,000.

During the four-week project slated to start the week of July 29 on a day to be determined, all businesses will be fully accessible, however, with the northbound span closed, detours will be in place.

Motorists are advised they will need to use either the Five Rocks Road or 21st Avenue bridges to cross from Gering to Scottsbluff. The western, southbound span of the 10th Street/Broadway bridge will be open during the project; repairs to that span are expected to begin this coming December and last in excess of 200 construction days.
