The mayor of Crawford is now facing the prospect of having to resign or face a recall election later this year.

Chadron radio station KCSR is reporting a second attempt at a recall petition drive aimed at Tom Phillips was successful in gathering at least 137 valid signatures from registered voters.

Dawes County Clerk Cheryl Feist has notified both Phillips and the city by registered mail, the receipt of which gives the city 21 days to set an election date at least 50 days into the future if Phillips doesn’t step down.

A similar recall petition drive at the end of last year fell short of gathering the needed signatures.
