The public is invited to take part in an event this weekend to raise awareness about efforts to prevent suicide in our communities.

The Scottsbluff ‘Out of the Darkness Community Walk’ takes place Sunday at the YMCA Trails West Camp in Scottsbluff.

Organizer Angela Diedrich says no only will the event boost awareness, but also provide support for those going through suicide ideation. “We don’t know who shows up, who’s struggling with those thoughts or those feelings. And when they show up and see all of these people here to support them and love on them and show them that we care, I hope it makes them feel a little bit less alone,” Diedrich said.

Diedrich says you can just show up for the walk, but they prefer to have people register in advance, either individually or in teams, and perhaps share why they’re participating. The organization is working toward a fundraising goal of $10,000.

You can register for the walk online at afsp.org/scottsbluff. On-site registration begins at noon, with the program and walk starting at 1:30 p.m.
