Polling places are open across Nebraska as voters cast ballots in a variety of races for the 2024 primary election.

Partisan races on the ballot will determine party nominations for candidates advancing to the general election in races for President, the House of Representatives, and both U.S. Senate seats, as well as in certain county commissioner contests.

25 legislative seats are up for grabs this year, with 15 of those on the ballot Tuesday narrowing the field to two candidates in each respective district ahead of the November general election.

Locally, a number of non-partisan races will have candidate fields narrowed, including city council races in Scottsbluff, Alliance, Sidney and Chadron, and a handful of ballot questions will appear, most notably a one cent sales tax initiative for residents in Minatare.

Voters are reminded that a proper voter ID with photo is required for the very first time across the state – without it, your ballot becomes provisional until you take your ID to the election office, which has a deadline of May 21.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen was projecting voter turnout for the primary election to be about 35 percent.
