Governor Jim Pillen was joined by state senators and surrounded by law enforcement to announce the Legislature is working on a plan to exempt much of public safety spending from lids proposed in the Governor’s property tax relief plan.

Speaking to reporters in Lincoln Monday, Lt. Gov. Joe Kelly said it has become clear that the limitations put in place last year through LB 388 are just too restrictive.

Revenue Committee chair Lou Ann Linehan of Elkhorn said her committee has been working on language that would be added to the Governor’s bills to provide more flexibility in meeting public safety needs.

She noted the current lids pose issues when equipment purchases get delayed by a year or more, or when a small jail has to pay for significant medical expenses for one or more inmates.
