Western Nebraska Pioneers survived a ninth-inning rally by the Wyo-Braska Legion All-Stars, hanging on for the 8-7 victory.

The contest started as a back-and-forth affair. As each team answered each other’s runs in the first three innings of action. In the fourth and fifth innings however, the Pioneers were able to silence the All-Star’s bats and added four runs during that stretch to give themselves a 7-3 lead entering the sixth.

The All-Stars would get a run back in the sixth before both sides went silent on offense until the Pioneers added a run in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead, now 8-4.

The All-Stars wouldn’t be immediately successful with their final chance to start a comeback in the top of the ninth, quickly finding themselves down to their final out. Then, the All-Stars tacked on three runs thanks to a Jackson Howard RBI base hit that drove in fellow Gering PVC teammate Bo Gable, followed by Jahrell Mendez surviving a rundown that allowed Howard to score and a throwing error that allowed Mendez to score. The All-Star’s last out luck would eventually run out however, as the last batter of the contest stuck out to end the game.

The Western Nebraska Pioneers will now play 12 consecutive games to end their regular season before hosting the Rocky Mountain League playoffs beginning on July 26 at Oregon Trail Park.
