A Monday mid-morning collision between a semi and SUV in the Wildcat Hills on Highway 71 about five miles south of Gering sent one person to the hospital.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman tells KNEB News his department was dispatched to the scene shortly after 10:30 a.m., finding a semi parked on the southbound shoulder of the highway, and a red Jeep on the northbound shoulder with heavy damage to the driver side.

Overman says preliminary investigation found the semi was southbound just beginning to go up the grade past the Old Stage Hill Road intersection when the Jeep, which had been parked on the southbound shoulder, performed a u-turn in front of the semi.

The driver of the semi was not injured, but the driver of the Jeep was taken from the scene by Regional West EMS with what the Sheriff characterized as serious injuries.

Overman says driver impairment was being investigated as a possible contributing factor.
