LEXINGTON, NE- Producers from all over Dawson County attended a free impromptu convention on options moving forward after a bout of severe weather moved through the county the last weekend of June.

The meeting had just over 100 people in attendance to weigh the different options that producers had moving forward after an estimated 30,000-40,000 acres saw hail damage across the county.

Dustin O’Hanlon with O’Hanlon Ag was the organizer of the event. O’Hanlon spoke on the impact the storm had on the ag sector in the county.

O’Hanlon continued on why the ball got rolling to organize a meeting like this after the weekend’s storms.

Experts in most corners of the ag sector were on a rotating panel consisting of crop insurance agents, several agronomists, a veterinarian, a UNL Extension Beef Systems Specialist, and Arrow Seed.

The first to talk were crop insurance agents from RCIS as they outline rough rules for producers to keep in mind as they move forward with fields that sustained damage. Agronomists then talked through the potential options moving forward with keeping the crop or potentially replanting.

The meeting was held at O’Hanlon Seed’s West Shop in Lexington.

The conversation then moved to the different feed options from cover crop to potentially even late season milo, and how those options would potential impact livestock.

Ben Martin with B&B Veterinary Services was the veterinarian at the event spoke on the potential issues if the feed is a high nitrate feed.

The one consistent point across each speaker was that each producers situation is going to be different, and producers need to talk to your insurance agent, agronomist, and other producers in the area.

If more information is needed you can contact O’Hanlon Seed and they will connect people to the correct resources.
