Nebraska junior high and high school students interested in agronomy are invited to attend the 11th annual Youth Crop Scouting Competition.

This year’s contest will be held August 7th at the Eastern Nebraska Research, Extension and Education Center near Mead.

Students interested in corn and soybeans can learn about crop growth, development and basic crop scouting principles.

Brandy VanDeWalle, a Nebraska Extension educator in Clay and Fillmore counties, said many students in years past have gone on to study agronomy at the collegiate level after being part of the program.

“They’ve really been able to use all of these real-life skills to get out there and become a real-world agronomist,” VanDeWalle said. “We know the program is working.”

VanDeWalle said 4H clubs, FFA chapters and others can enter the contest, which is limited to the first 10 teams. Teams are made up of three to five students.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three teams – $500, $300, and $150 – and the top two teams will advance to a regional competition which will be held in Nebraska this year.

Registration is due July 15, 2024.
