A Mitchell man and his wife are gathering donations of food and other items to help provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Helene.
Outside of Fresh Foods in Gering sits a 40-foot trailer that Scott Miller is hoping to fill front-to-back and top-to-bottom with supplies for western North Carolina, or wherever relief organizations say they’re needed.
Miller tells KNEB News the idea came from a weekend social media post by Missouri man who made a run to the southeast with supplies.
“I told my wife, you know, we can do that. We can do that. And so we posted a deal online about what we had in mind, And a close friend of mine, Tom Cozad, immediately got ahold of me and says, that’s a great idea. He says, ‘Here’s what I can do. I’ve got to talk to so and so and so and so.’ And he’s been very instrumental in what’s happening here as well. And so we got with Fresh Foods and they’re loading us up, and anybody else who wants to bring anything is welcome,” said Miller.
Cash donations are paying for six pallets of food and other supplies from Fresh Foods, and while Miller says they’re probably set with bottled water, anything else will be welcome, especially items on a list posted on the side of his trailer.
Miller says he and his wife plan on hitting the road late Wednesday or early Thursday, and once they do, his employer, Floyd’s Truck Center, is donating by paying their travel expenses during the trip.
