Minatare voters approve sales and use tax

Minatare voters approve sales and use tax
May 14th, 2024 | Scott Miller

The sale of taxable items in Minatare will soon generate funding for the community.

Voters in the community approved a one cent sales and use tax during the primary election Tuesday evening by a margin of more than 2 to 1, with 72 in favor and 31 voting against.

50 percent of the proceeds of the tax will be used for infrastructure improvements, 25 percent for community improvement and the other 25 percent for downtown redevelopment.

Voters approved the measure despite the fact proponents could not provide a firm estimate of how much the tax would generate each year, as the community has never approved such a tax and the number of businesses that would collect it is somewhat limited.

The tax has a ten-year sunset provision, and would have to be reauthorized by Minatare residents in 2034.
