A 32-year-old Minatare man accused of setting fires on the side of the new VA building and causing more than $12,000 in damage in February has struck a plea deal to avoid standing trial.

Court records say Dario Olivas manually shut off the power of the building as he allegedly set fires in the alleyway. Security video caught Olivas on film standing in front of the VA Clinic electrical box. Staff says that with the power shut off, thousands of dollars worth of medication was destroyed because it did not stay refrigerated via the power outage.

Earlier this month in District Court, he pleaded no contest to a charge of Attempted Criminal Mischief (More than $5,000), a class 1 misdemeanor. He’ll be back in court on September 5th for sentencing.
