A sold out Eagles tribute band kept downtown Scottsbluff rocking Tuesday night, but it was red hot chili peppers causing a commotion at the hotel afterparty.

Scottsbluff fire crews were dispatched to the Hampton Inn around 9 p.m. for a odor check on the 3rd floor and a haze on the third floor. Upon arrival fire personnel made contact with the night manager of the hotel and he stated the residents were complaining of a burning sensation when they would take a breath in.

Crew made entry and determined the source of the odor and haze was coming from one of the rooms on the third floor, and further investigation revealed that the occupant was heating up some peppers in the microwave, and the cup had caught fire in the microwave causing the odor and haze. The third floor was ventilated and all occupants were able to go back to their rooms.

One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation by Regional West EMS but was not transported.

Scottsbluff Fire Prevention Officer Chris Perales says while this call was a result of burnt food, there wasn’t enough smoke to trigger the fire alarm system to go off. Prior to SFD’s arrival, the staff of Hampton Inn put the Fire Alarm system in drill mode to evacuate the building out of abundance of caution, until the source of the haze and odor could be determined and resolved. Perales wanted to note the tremendous work of the staff of the Scottsbluff Hampton Inn for putting the safety of their guests first.
