Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball coach Isaac Lu has stepped down to take an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, the University of San Francisco.

Lu has been at WNCC since August 2020, spending the first two years as an assistant coach and the past two years as the head coach.

During the 2020-2021 season, Lu served as the assistant to both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Lu helped guide the women’s team to a 17-6 record and an NJCAA National Tournament Appearance which was highlighted by a 63-60 upset over number 1-ranked and seeded Jones College en route to an Elite Eight finish. The Cougars achieved a national ranking as high as the number 10 spot during the course of the year. In the summer, Lu was selected to coach in the NJCAA Top 40 All-Star Event, where his squad won both games they played.

The 2021-2022 season marked Lu’s second season at WNCC, and his first working exclusively with the women’s basketball program. The Cougars finished the year with a 30-3 record and earned an at-large bid to the NJCAA National Tournament where they knocked off Murray State College, Wabash Valley College, and South Plains College on their way to a Final Four finish.

Lu was appointed head coach for the 2022-23 season and guided the team to a 21-9 record. In his final season as head coach, he led the Cougars to a 25-7 record. In the four years with WNCC, he helped move 13 players onto the NCAA Division I level, including seven in 2022.

Prior to arriving at WNCC, Lu was a practice player for the USF Dons’ Women’s Basketball Team from 2017-2020.

A new WNCC women’s coach will be announced in the coming weeks.
