Bridgeport area residents are mourning the passing of a long-time leader in their community.

Norman “Norm” Christensen passed away peacefully at the age of 81 at the Chimney Rock Nursing Home in Bayard on Sunday.

Born in June 1943, Christensen arrived in the Bridgeport area around 1970 with his wife Rosella, purchased a funeral home and started a family, becoming heavily involved in the community through business endeavors and involvement with music, his church and the local Masonic Lodge.

According to his obituary, he’s perhaps best known as holding the distinction of being the longest running consecutive mayor in the history of Nebraska, serving as Bridgeport mayor for 24 years.
