A long-time member of the Scottsbluff Police Department is no longer on the force, and is set to give up his Nebraska law enforcement certification.

According to the agenda for the Police Standards Advisory Council that meets this coming Wednesday in Grand Island, Brian Wasson will voluntarily surrender his certificate.

In a statement to KNEB News, City Manager and Police Chief Kevin Spencer confirmed that Wasson “is no longer with the Scottsbluff Police Department, and has not been since September 6.”

Wasson had been with the department for approximately 25 years, and more than 15 as a Captain.

Spencer’s statement continued that it’s “a personnel matter that is being investigated, and because of that, I cannot comment further.”

Cody Thomas with the Nebraska State Patrol told KNEB News that the NSP had started an investigation at the request of Scottsbluff Police, but could not provide any additional details as to the nature of the investigation as it was still ongoing.

When asked about the situation by KNEB News, the Nebraska Attorney General’s office replied they do not confirm or deny investigations.

According to the Nebraska Crime Commission website, the surrender of a law enforcement certificate is treated the same as a revocation for a conviction on a felony or class 1 misdemeanor, or after an officer is found by the advisory council as having engaged in serious misconduct.

Once the revocation of a certificate is confirmed, the Director of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center reports it to the National Decertification Index maintained by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training.
