A bill that would return Nebraska to a winner-take-all system for Presidential votes in the Electoral College is gaining national attention, and a party change by one state senator could help make it happen with just a few days left in the legislative session.

Political observers on MSNBC and on the Politico website say the change contained in LB764 would take away President Biden’s easiest path to a 270 vote victory, which would include wins in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, plus the one electoral vote from metro Omaha.

Governor Jim Pillen has been urging state lawmakers to take up the measure, with former President Donald Trump voicing support for the idea.

The subject takes on new urgency with the announcement that Sen. Mike McDonnell has switched parties from Democrat to Republican, which would give the GOP enough votes to end any related filibuster and force the bill to the governor’s desk.
