Lawmakers Break For Weekend Without Debate on Bills

Lawmakers Break For Weekend Without Debate on Bills

It’s been a sluggish week for Nebraska lawmakers convened in Lincoln for a special session aimed at property tax relief.

Floor debate was set to begin on Wednesday, but none of the bills were actually ready to be debated.

Lawmakers did take time to voice their opinions of the special session, but Speaker John Arch had to step in to end Thursday’s session after it became apparent that nothing would be ready to debate until they reconvene next week.

“I mentioned at the beginning of the of our day today that that we would stand at ease for a period of time,” said Arch. “Senator Linehan has spoken to me and said that that committee amendment needs additional work. And so she wants this at her request that she would like to adjourn the body until 1:00 on Monday.”

Lawmakers did give the green light in several confirmation reports for different committees during Wednesday’s session.

The final day of the first special session is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, and at this point it appears there’s only a slim chance that any bills could pass. Gov. Pillen said earlier this year he’s prepared to call for a second or even third special session to get property tax relief bills passed.
