July was yet another tragic month on the state’s roadways, trending toward what could be one of the more deadly years for Nebraska motor vehicle fatalities in recent memory.

According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, 25 people lost their lives in 23 fatal crashes last month, including six motorcyclists and one person on an electric scooter.

The number of fatalities brought the year to date figure to 145, which is 26 percent higher than the same time last year, and 13 percent above the average of the previous four years for January through July.

Only 30 of the 109 vehicle occupants killed during 2024 were using seat belts.
