Signing season continued on Monday afternoon over at Gering high school with senior Eli Marez finalizing his decision join the Track & Field program at Doane University in Crete.
“The visit part, the team was awesome and Ed (Coach Ed Fye) is a awesome person and made me feel welcomed when I was there.”
Marez’s father, Rick, is the head coach for cross country and track & field at Gering, so Eli has been around the program even before being in it. He says the time around all the great runners at Gering helped him become the runner he is today.
“That’s a huge plus because I’ve seen what success looks like and try to mirror it. Like all the people I’ve looked up like Xavier (Arellano), I wanted to be like him and beat his standards and all that. So it really helped out a lot.”
Marez says the main goals for this upcoming spring season are to qualify for State in the 800 meters, plus the mile and two-mile relays.
