A 97-year-old Gering woman was a top honoree late last week in Omaha for her commitment to volunteerism at ServeNebraska’s 2024 Step Forward Awards.

Mildred Moody was this year’s winner of the National Service Award for her more than quarter century of service to our local AmeriCorps Seniors foster grandparent program.

“Grandma Mildred” as she’s affectionally referred to by the staff and students at Geil Elementary, spends much of her time one on one with students helping them with reading and math.

She told KNEB News she was shocked to get nominated and selected for this honor.

District 3 Congressman Adrian Smith of Gering was on hand on Friday to congratulate Grandma Mildred at this year’s Step Forward Awards.
