Authorities are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a male suspected of assaulting a Gering resident with a hammer midday Wednesday.

According to a release from Capt. Jason Rogers, officers were called to a residence in the 1800 block of 20th Street just before noon and we’re told the victim of an assault was at a neighbor’s house asking for help.

When Officers arrived, they met a male who was bleeding from his head and face, and determined the man was assaulted inside his home.

The victim said that while he was inside his house, an unknown male suspect entered the house through the front door and began hitting him in the head with a hammer. A scuffle ensued and the suspect eventually left the house.

The man was treated on scene by members of the Gering Fire Department and then transported to Regional West Medical Center emergency room by Valley Ambulance.

The victim described the suspect as a Hispanic or Asian male, 5’8” to 6 feet tall with a stocky build. The man said the suspect drove away from the residence in a smaller, dark grey sedan before the 911 call was made.

Rogers says officers canvased the neighborhood and are actively trying to locate a suspect vehicle, and the identity of the suspect has yet to be determined.

Any residents in the area of 20th and R Streets in Gering that may have security camera footage they are willing to share, or information about the incident, are asked to contact the Gering Police Department at 308-436-5089.
