The Gering City Council last week approved nearly a dozen grants from the community Keno fund.

Eleven grants totaling more than $57,700 were approved, ranging in size from $1,000 up to $16,300.

Keno Committee chair Darrell Bentley told council members that may see like a lot, but it’s just that time of year. “With summer activities coming on, there are a lot of people looking for help to put on their projects. Everyone that comes to see us, in their heart, it’s great, it’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened, but we have to be careful with the citizens of Gering’s money. And we did spend almost $10,000 more than what we took in in the quarter, although, the first quarter we had money left over so we didn’t get into it (the fund balance),” Bentley said.

Included are a number of new funding requests, including money for the Oregon Trail Days old settler’s luncheon and SafeRide OTD, as well as money to the Scottsbluff/Gering Sports Council that will go toward the second year of the USA Cycling Gravel Nationals.
