Today, U.S. Senators Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) and Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) released the following statements after the U.S. Senate confirmed Susan M. Bazis to be a federal district judge for the District of Nebraska:
“I recommended Judge Susan Bazis to the White House because of her undeniable skill, expertise, and integrity,” said Senator Fischer. “Her record speaks for itself: she has decades of experience administering justice, upholding the law, and defending our Constitution. The Senate did the right thing today by confirming Judge Bazis, and I have no doubt she will continue to serve our state well. Congratulations, Judge Bazis!”
“Judge Susan Bazis has seven years of experience serving as a federal magistrate judge for the District of Nebraska,” said Senator Ricketts. “I’m confident that her strong intellect and temperament will serve our state well in her new role. I applaud my Senate colleagues for supporting her nomination. Congratulations, Judge Bazis!”
Background:
Judge Bazis has been a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of Nebraska since 2017 — overseeing both civil and criminal matters. Prior to this, she served as a state court judge in Douglas County from 2007 to 2016, handling criminal, civil, probate, and protection order matters. On the court, she served as the Presiding Judge from 2010 to 2013.
Senator Fischer first recommended Susan Bazis as a federal judge to President Biden for the District of Nebraska in January of 2023, after publicly inviting applications from qualified Nebraskans during a 60-day period in Fall 2022.
At a confirmation hearing before the Judiciary Committee in January of 2024, Senator Fischer expressed her support for Judge Bazis and urged her colleagues to approve the nomination. The Judiciary panel passed the nomination out of Committee on February 29, 2024.
Judge Bazis’ confirmation ensures that the U.S. District of Nebraska has the appropriate judicial resources to continue operating effectively and administering justice expediently for the people of Nebraska.
