Federal, state and county offices are closed today in honor of Juneteenth.
The holiday, which became federally recognized in 2021, is named for June 19th which commemorates the formal end of slavery in the United States.
The University of Nebraska says that in 1980, Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday; with several others following suit over the years before Congress signed it into a Federal holiday three years ago.
