Earth Day and Hazardous Household Waste collection event Saturday in Scottsbluff
April 19th, 2024 | News Release

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. The United States celebrated the first Earth Day in 1970. Keep Scottsbluff Gering Beautiful (KSGB) is doing its part by hosting the annual Earth Day Celebration and Household Hazardous Waste Collection at Uptown Mall Scottsbluff on Saturday, April 20th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. We will be set up in the west parking lot, northwest of Harbor Freight.

KSGB partners with many local businesses and organizations to offer these events each year. Platte Valley Bank will offer free document shredding by Docu-shred. They will accept personal shred documents only and they ask that all metal fasteners, 3-ring binders, and spiral notebooks be removed. Document shredding will begin at 9:00 am. The North Platte Natural Resources District will be giving away trees and the Scottsbluff High School FFA chapter will be testing well water samples. Bring a small well water sample in a clean glass jar and you will receive the test results the same day. The Gering Public Library and Keep Scottsbluff Gering Beautiful will have information booths and giveaways. The City of Gering Landfill will have their used oil trailer at the event, they also accept uncontaminated used oil during normal business hours, all year long.

KSGB has contracted with Clean Harbors to offer the Household Hazardous Waste Collection event. The quote for the 2024 HHW event is over $56,000. KSGB has been awarded grant funds from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy to cover 75% of the quote. We are waiving the fee for 2024 because of the generous financial support from local partners.

Clean Harbors will be accepting flammable liquids (gasoline, kerosine, thinners, antifreeze); household, lawn, garden, and pool/spa chemicals; mercury; stains and varnishes; fluorescent light bulbs; auto batteries; and propane cylinders. This event is for residential waste only.

We will not be accepting household batteries, electronics, paint, tires, pharmaceuticals, appliances, construction waste, or plastic grocery sacks at the Earth Day Celebration or Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

The City of Scottsbluff Environmental Services does accept batteries, electronics (for a fee), and paint during normal business hours, all year long. You must tape the battery terminal before environmental services will accept your household batteries for recycling.

The City of Gering Landfill does accept tires (for a fee) during normal business hours, all year long.

Most local grocery stores have a bin available to recycle plastic grocery sacks.

Keep Scottsbluff Gering Beautiful will be offering the annual Pharmaceutical Take-back collection later in the year. We will accept all over the counter and prescription medications, vitamins, supplements, and sharps.
