The Cheyenne County Sheriff is advising citizens in and around the county there has been a rash of igloo burglaries, vehicle, ATV and trailer thefts in and around the Cheyenne County area.

In a news release, Sheriff Adam E. Frerichs says his office would urge residents to check their valuables in their igloos and report any thefts to our agency immediately. In addition, Frerichs asks residents to not leave vehicles and trailers parked unattended in remote areas, lock the vehicles and pull the keys.

While the Sheriff’s Office has stepped up patrol in the igloo areas and set up surveillance, it is difficult for deputies to be in the right place at the right time.

On February 22, 2024, members of the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office and the Sidney Police Department executed a search warrant on a residence in Sidney, NE, that was believed to have been involved in the theft of a couple of local ATV’s. Three arrests were made as a result of that investigation and subsequent search warrant.

Frerichs says they do not want to relay a false sense of security with the arrests, as we believe there to be more than one group committing the crimes. He reiterate that residents need to check on property, report any thefts and make every effort to make belongings “hard targets.”
