Nebraska catcher Josh Caron was named one of 16 semifinalists for the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission announced Wednesday morning.

Formerly known as the Johnny Bench Award, the National Collegiate Catcher Award was established in 2000, as Caron joins Justin Cowan (2000) and Mitch Abeita (2008) as the only three semifinalists in Nebraska history.

Caron is batting .313 this season with 14 doubles, a triple and 38 runs scored, while leading the Huskers with 11 home runs and 55 RBI.

The Sun Prairie, Wis., native has appeared in 52 games, with 51 starts, behind the dish for the Huskers and entered the week as one of 11 catchers nationally with a .310-plus batting average and at least 25 extra-base hits and 55 runs driven in this season.

Nebraska takes on sixth-seeded Purdue tonight in an elimination game at 7 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
