It was a polar opposites type of day for panhandle at the Girls State Basketball Tournament in the C1 bracket on Friday morning in the state semifinals.

Sidney experienced the joy of winning and advancing to play for a state title with a 37-35 win over Grand Island Central Catholic while Bridgeport fell to Lincoln Christian 51-32 and now moves into the third place game on Saturday.

For Bridgeport today they scored just 10 points in the second half and while they held Lincoln Christian star Kena Ailes to just 7 points (she averages 19), it was junior guard Mattie Kassebaum that went off for 28 points.

Bridgeport’s Olivia Loomis-Goltl had a team high 17 points and fellow senior Grace Dean finished with 12 but after that there were just three more points total for the team. Ella Schluterbusch was held scoreless one day after finishing with 22 points in a round one win.

Bridgeport will tangle with GICC tomorrow at 12 pm MT and we’ll have coverage on KMOR 93.3 FM & KMORfm.com starting at 11:45.

For Sidney, they’ve now won back to back games by two points after surviving a late push today from the GICC Crusaders and they’ll battle Lincoln Christian tomorrow for the state title at 10 am MT.

Sidney already owns a win over Lincoln Christian this season, winning at the Girls Showcase event in Kearny back in early January by the final of 57-54.
