The last minute advancement of a bill that would provide state funding to those wanting to attend private school drew praise from school-choice supporters and scorn from opponents.

After surviving a filibuster, LB 1402, which appropriates $10 million for the State Treasurer to direct to non-profits granting private and parochial school scholarships, advanced on a vote of 31 to 12.

Opponents called the measure unconstitutional, with the Nebraska State Education Association calling it a voucher scam that’s a slap in the face of voters.

The Platte Institute supported the move, saying the bill protects expanding educational opportunities for families and students across the state.

The measure would supersede the Opportunity Scholarship Act, which is on the November ballot for a referendum vote.
