While the Cattlemen’s Ball is this weekend outside of Minatare benefiting cancer research, a much smaller fundraiser takes place in Gering for the family of a man who recently lost his battle with cancer.

On Saturday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, the Gering American Legion Post 36 will host the benefit for the family of Jeremy Jacobs, a 44-year-old husband, father of four and Navy veteran who had been fighting colon cancer since November 2022.

Co-organizer Gary Davison says the proceeds will help with final expenses, medical bills and help replace lost income for the family now headed up by Julie Jacobs. “She’s a preschool teacher in Mitchell, and a lot of people know her, she’s very involved in the community,” said Davison. “Their kids, they’re involved in 4-H, Julie is a big part of FFA Now, too, and so the whole family is involved in a lot of stuff.”

A meal starts at 5:00 p.m., at a price for kids 4 to 11, $10 for those 12 and older, with each including a raffle ticket, and meals will be available to-go.

The fundraiser also includes live and silent auctions, as well as games and fun for the kids, with all proceeds going to the Jacobs family. Included among the auction items will be a bronze sculpture that the artist has traditionally donated to the Cattlemen’s Ball, but this year it will be sold to the highest bidder to the benefit of the Jacobs’.
