Hearings continue on a wide variety of tax bills at the Nebraska Capitol building as lawmakers work towards property tax relief.

Bayard Senator Steve Erdman testified yesterday before the Revenue Committee on LB16, which would implement the EPIC Option Consumption Tax, which would repeal all state taxes except consumption and excise taxes.

In turn, the measure would establish a 7.5% consumption tax on nearly all purchases across the state.

“But this consumption tax will actually place the taxpayer in first place. What we’re asking today and what we’ve asked in the past this is more important today than ever is that you advance these to the body for discussion,” Erdman testified. “We need to have a discussion on the floor of the legislature so we can work out the details of the implementation. We’ve never been afforded that opportunity.”

As of Thursday morning, a total of 81 bills have been introduced this session, with only five days remaining in the 11 days scheduled of this special session.
