Area glass companies have been working overtime the past few weeks, trying to get vehicle glass replaced as quickly as possible for those who suffered hail damage from severe storms.

Lee Floth with Platte River Glass says it was mass chaos immediately following the storms that hit starting June 23rd, especially the one that hammered the northern part of Scottsbluff.

While seven or so glass replacements is a typical day, the company has been working on 20 or more vehicles a day since that time but Floth says fortunately, glass supplies haven’t been a big issue.

“For the most part, we’re getting truckloads of glass every day. As far as getting customers scheduled in, that’s the hard part, we can only do so many (replacements) in a day,” said Floth. “I mean, I get here between 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. every morning, and up until last night, we weren’t going home until 10, 10:30 at night.”

Floth tells KNEB News his company has such work scheduled out all the way into the latter part of this month, and many of the other glass companies in the area have been seeing a similar demand for service.

He says specialty pieces of glass such as sunroofs can have a wait time of a month or more depending on the availability of new glass, usually from a dealership. A used piece of side or specialty glass can be used, however, Floth says it must be provided by the customer.

Windshields are relatively inexpensive compared to smaller pieces of glass or those that have a significant curve to them, which he says will always be much more expensive.
