Potential porch pirates purloining packages in Alliance may have fewer targets this year with a special service being offered by the police department.

For any inbound gift deliveries, Alliance Police are offering their Present Protection Program, where residents can have their packages delivered to the department office, then pick them up at their convenience.

Chief Phil Lukens tells KNEB News the debut of the program last year was a big success. “And we didn’t have any packages that were taken from any porches, other than any bait packages we set up,” said Lukens. “So, that was a very successful Christmas season for folks, and we wanted to make sure we could extend that type of service again to our community, just so we can keep the thefts to an absolute minimum.”

To take advantage, all that’s needed is to send a package to the attention of your name to the Alliance Police Department at their address on Niobrara Avenue. Lukens says having a dispatch center that’s staffed 24/7 is a key to being able to offer the service to the city’ residents, and there’s no limit on the size of a package. In 2021, someone even had a large-screen TV delivered using the APD PPP.

Lukens points to the program as one of many his staff has been able to use to help drive a decrease in property crime in the community.
