Mildred Moody, or “Grandma Mildred” as she’s affectionately known at Geil Elementary in Gering, is set to be honored this fall for more than a quarter century of volunteering service.

The 97-year-old has been a foster grandparent for 27 years, and has spent countless hours helping kindergartener and first grade students get up to speed with their peers.

Mandy Fertig, the program manager of our local Foster Grandparent program, says Moody is the sweetest person she’s ever met. That’s why it was a no-brainer for her to nominate her for a Serve Nebraska volunteer award.

“Grandma” Mildred will be the recipient of the 2024 Serve Nebraska Step Forward National Service Award in October in Omaha. Fertig is actively trying to recruit funds and resources to fly her out to the award luncheon on October 4th, and anybody who is willing to help or has leads can call her at 308-633-3348.

KNEB.tv’s Ryan Murphy spent Wednesday morning with Moody, who revealed that the time spent with these elementary school students are what have kept her going all these years:
