2024 Panhandle Polar Plunge Set for Saturday Morning
February 21st, 2024 | Scott Miller

The Panhandle Polar Plunge has challenged local participants to show support for Special Olympics Nebraska by plunging into the icy waters of the North Platte River.

Those brave enough to run into the water this Saturday morning will be raising money by collecting pledges from family, friends and coworkers.

Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman tells KNEB News while the weather looks pretty nice for a February Saturday, the event is always kept safe for participants.

“And so we’re going to have the Scottsbluff Fire Department and the dive team will be there. We’ll have medical people on scene. So it’s very safe. We get the Paul Reed construction, helps us get the site prepared. So it’s just the way we need get anything out of the river that could be dangerous. But one thing that we have is High Plains Spas provides hot tubs and wind up and there’s four or five polar plunges in Nebraska. We’re the only ones that have hot tubs. So great. Thanks to Chad and High Plains for always, always volunteering to do that.”

Charlie Kennedy also told KNEB News that the community participation in the event has meant so much to their organization over the past 13 years.

Plungers are encouraged to form teams, dress in costume and share their experience by using hashtag #BeBoldGetCold. Prizes are awarded for creativity and fundraising.

All proceeds from the Panhandle Polar Plunge goes to support our local Special Olympics Nebraska athletes.
