The 103rd Oregon Trail Days gets underway this evening with the Kickoff Barbecue and Street Dance, held this year around the Gering Civic Plaza.

Starting at 6 pm, you can get a pulled pork sandwich, chips and drink for $5.00 while you listen to free live music and perhaps kick up your heels a little.

Day-long events get underway early tomorrow and Saturday, and this year there’s a new competitive event taking place at 9am on Sunday according to OTD Board Chair Rebecca Shields.

“Pickleball has just taken over the city of Gering like you wouldn’t believe. We’re just so busy Saturday, you know, there’s too many events going on,” said Shields. “We don’t want people to have to miss something to play, so, we’re working with Trey Winkler from Gering High School, and he’s going to be putting it on, and we’re excited to have it as an Oregon Trail Days event.”

Shields said organizers always like to carry on with the legacy events, but they also try to stay up with some of the latest trends, and so pickleball made the cut this year.
