With heavy yet joyful hearts, we remember and celebrate the life of Kathy Leikam, who peacefully journeyed into the arms of her Lord and Savior on July 30, 2023. Born in Scottsbluff Nebraska, Kathy was the youngest of three children to Herman and Esther (Gro) Weidaman. Her early years were spent on the farm with her sister Vicki and brother Gary where she enjoyed the outdoors and creating memories alongside her faithful canine companions.

Kathy’s life took a beautiful turn when fate led her to the local Alexanders Supermarket, where she crossed paths with Rick Leikam. From this marriage, Kathy and Rick were blessed with two remarkable children, Kim and Haven. This December would have been their 55th anniversary. Kathy’s role as a loving and devoted mother was characterized by her continuous support and the comfort of her homemade meals that graced the family table.

Later, the family expanded with the addition of son-in-law Kevin, whose playful antics often found Kathy at the center of his mischievous pranks. Kathy’s heart continued to grow as she welcomed her grandchildren Tyler and Ashlyn Lang into her life. She loved spending the summers with them making everlasting memories. She enjoyed taking them on school shopping adventures, followed by cherished trips to the bakery for a sweet treat after school.

The arrival of Kathy’s first great-grandchild, Ryker, brought immeasurable joy to her life. She showered Ryker with love and an abundance of thoughtful gifts, creating a special bond that would forever be treasured.

As time moved forward, Kathy’s family continued to grow with the addition of Haven’s family; Chanda, Karis, Kaylee, Kami, and Weston. They were welcomed with open arms and over the years many great memories were created.

Kathy was more than just a loving presence; she was a beacon of kindness and compassion. Her ability to listen without judgment, and to offer love and acceptance unconditionally, left an unforgettable mark on all who were fortunate enough to know her. Kathy was a remarkable baker. She loved spending time perfecting scrumptious treats like homemade brownies, pumpkin bars, toffee bars, German blackberry casserole, German blackberry pie and grebel. Every visit was made sweeter by her “generous” offerings of dessert.

Holidays and birthdays held a special place in Kathy’s heart. She poured her love into making each celebration unforgettable with carefully chosen gifts, homemade desserts, and humorous cards that brought smiles to all. Kathy has always been a dedicated Husker football fan and Husker volleyball fan. Her enthusiasm showed as she watched every televised game. Alongside watching the Huskers, she loved watching her British shows and Agatha Christie films. In the mornings and evenings, she enjoyed a steaming cup of black tea swirled with her favorite creamer.

Kathy’s faith was the cornerstone of her life, making her a devoted prayer warrior for her beloved family and friends. She uplifted them in prayer every chance she had. She continuously prayed for everyone’s happiness, health, protection, safe travels and life events. Kathy led the family in prayer during gatherings and holidays, highlighting the importance of faith and togetherness.

Kathy was a devoted member of her church, First Assembly of God. She dedicated her time and energy to help with various activities, from church dinners to events and soup kitchen. She shared her talents by creating uplifting church bulletins. As a demonstration of her endless generosity, she ensured every member received a birthday card, anniversary card, or get well soon card.

Among her many interests, Kathy delighted in nurturing her garden, where German blackberries, rhubarb, cucumbers, and tomatoes flourished under her care. Her flower gardens mirrored her vibrant spirit, displaying the beauty of morning glories, cosmos, sunflowers, and roses.

Kathy enjoyed playing board games and cards with her family. She often took part in a game of Pitch, where she learned the easy way to know when to discard the 3. Although she enjoyed playing the game Aggravation, she rarely won a game against her granddaughter Ashlyn.

Kathy leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will forever be engraved in the hearts of her husband Rick, her daughter Kim Lang (Kevin), her son Haven Leikam (Chanda), her cherished grandchildren Tyler (Stephanie), Ashlyn, Karis, Kaylee, Kami, Weston, and brilliant great-grandson Ryker, along with her faithful companion Shadow and her sister Vicki.

In her final request, Kathy invites all to honor her memory by being kind, extending acts of goodness, and spreading joy wherever they go. Be a good person, buy someone lunch or flowers, and don’t forget to give loved ones a call. Let us remember her with smiles, for she was, and will always be, the reason our hearts are touched by love.

Within a special note left by Kathy, she wrote, “We have two of the greatest children ever, Kimberly Ann and Haven Thomas.” She also expressed her gratitude, “Thanks Ash for all the granny talks and Tyler thanks for that sweet great grandbaby, Ryker James” and an additional comment saying “Thanks Rick for putting up with me.”

As we say goodbye to Kathy and until we meet again, we embrace the warmth, compassion, and love that she leaves behind. Her spirit will forever brighten our lives, and her memory will be our source of inspiration as we navigate life ahead.

Rest in eternal peace, Kathy, knowing that your love will forever live within our hearts.
