James Hugh Costello, 89, of Lyman, NE, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Scottsbluff Care and Rehab in Scottsbluff, NE. His Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 2-4pm at the Mitchell Event Center in Mitchell, NE with Pastor Rick Reisig officiating. Casual attire is requested. Cremation has taken place. It is respectfully requested that in lieu of any flowers, memorials in James’s honor be made in care of his family to be designated at a later date. James was born in Wagner, South Dakota on February 19, 1934, to Hugh and Florence Costello, where he grew up and received his education. Then he went on to serve in the US Army from 1954 to 1966. Upon discharge from the Army, he furthered his education in Criminal Justice where he received several degrees, his degrees lead him into 44 years of law-enforcement before retiring at age 75. He started his career in Deadwood South Dakota and ended in Nebraska. He met Jamie and later they were married on December 22, 1980. They settled in Sioux county where they raised three children Jimmy, Kenneth, and Sadonya.
James is survived by his wife Jamie, sons Jimmy Costello of Lyman, Ne, Kenneth (Chantil) Costello of Gordon, NE, and daughters Sadonya (Jaydee) Sims of Rapid City, Laurie (Thomas) Mullenmaster of Owatonna MN, Janelle (Mike) Phillips of Mitchell, South Dakota, Rhonda Costello of Mitchell SD, and all his grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends that dearly love him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Florence, daughter-in-law, Joanne Costello, other family and friends. Also, his loyal K9s that served with him Duke and Rex.
