George Wayne McMurtry, 87, of Bayard, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2022, at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Bayard with Pastor Larry Russel officiating. Burial will follow at the Bayard Cemetery. Cremation has taken place in accordance with George’s wishes. The memorial service will be livestreamed and recorded to George’s obituary page viewable at www.reverencefuneralparlor.com. Memorials may be made in care of Cornerstone Fellowship Church.
George was born May 20, 1935, to Leo and and Vina (Templer) McMurtry in a log cabin home along the river in Scotts Bluff County near Bayard. He grew up in Bayard with one brother and six sisters. George put up custom hay for horses with his parents.
He married Patricia Jane Hatfield on June 25, 1956, at the First Assembly of God Church in Scottsbluff. George and Patricia lived in Bayard until his death. They had five children: a little girl who died at birth and four boys.
George worked as a mechanic at Ensser Chevrolet, and at that time was also a member of the Bayard Fire Department. He started working at Great Western Sugar in 1962 where he remained for 38 years. George owned and operated a sod farm in the summers. He retired from Great Western Sugar and began George’s Custom Hub Pullers where he made antique car parts. George sold hub pullers to customers as far away as Australia. He was a member of the Rollin Oldies Car Club in Scottsbluff. He was also a scout leader, and the ring master of the Bayard roller skating rink. George attended Cornerstone Fellowship Church faithfully.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Patricia of Bayard; sons, Wayne Bill (Tamara) of Bayard, Robert Charles (Sherry) of Warsaw, MO, Donald Ray (Rose) of Richardton, ND, and Timothy Dean (Rebecca) of Cheyenne, WY; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister, Leona Herdt; as well as several nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leo; sisters, Margaret, Ruth, Edna, Mary, and Hazel; and grandsons, Keith and Nicholas.
