Dan was born on March 19,1960 to his parents, Gary and Loretta Shiers, at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, California. The young family lived here until 1962 while his father served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1962 they moved to Scottsbluff, Nebraska where he lived during his school years. In his youth, Dan went to Lincoln Heights Grade School and enjoyed a very active neighborhood that never lacked for pickup games of baseball and basketball, bike tag, or sand lot adventures. He graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1978 and began working at the Great Western Sugar Company. He worked there until his retirement in 2018.

One of the happiest times in his life is when Dan met Melissa May and helped her raise her children, Brent and Brittny Eckman. They lived in Gering and were together for many years and continued to be very important to him. After Dan retired, he intended to remodel his house and begin to travel. His plans changed in early 2019 when he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which he battled until his death. Some of Dan’s favorite past times were fishing with his Grandpa Louie, weekend carpentry, Bruce Springsteen, sports, gardening and his beloved cat, Kitty.
