Arthur “Art” Benzel, 89, Gering

Arthur “Art” Benzel, 89 of Gering, Nebraska passed away Friday, November 11, 2022 at his home.

His funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Gering Zion Church with Pastor Tim Hebbert officiating. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery with military honors by the Nebraska Army National Guard and American Legion Post #36, Gering. Visitation will be an hour prior the service at the church. Art was born on January 16, 1933 in Gering, Nebraska to Carl and Pauline (Dahlberg) Benzel. He started school at Carter Canyon School in rural Gering, later at Haig School, Lake Alice School and graduated from Scotts Bluff High School in 1951.

In 1953, He entered the US Army where he took basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas and served 14 months in Korea with the 88th Infantry Battalion. He was honorably discharged on March 17, 1955.

On June 12, 1955, he married his long time sweetheart Carol Meisner. They lived in the Scottsbluff/Gering area all of their lives.

Art worked for 41 years at Lockwood Corp as a welder machinist and machine shop supervisor. He also worked at Universal Irrigation and C.S. Precision Manufacturing.

He enjoyed bowling on several bowling leagues. He was a long time member of the Gering Zion Church, where he served as a Deacon. He always kept a well-groomed yard. He was active in the Gering Booster club for several years, he loved to attend all activities with grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known as Mr. Fix It and could fix anything.

Art is survived by his daughter Jana (Steve) Richter of Gering; granddaughter Lindsey (Dustin) Bruckner of Gering and Stefani Richter (fiancé Brandon Colfack) of O’Neill, NE; great grandchildren: Ivy, Eli, Declan and Millie; and brother-in-law Randy Meisner of Studio City, CA. and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, parents Carl and Pauline Benzel, brother Bernard Benzel, brother-in-law Conrad Fritzler, sister-in-law Lana Meisner and father-in-law and mother-in-law Herman and Emilie Meisner.
