WNCC soccer teams fall to Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – The Western Nebraska Community College soccer teams traveled to Iowa Western Community College on Wednesday for non-conference contests and faced two national ranked soccer programs.

The Cougar women faced the No. 1-ranked Reiver soccer program and the Cougars competed well but fell 10 1. The Cougar men face the No. 9 team in the nation and were shut-out 7-0.

Both teams will be back in action for Region IX conference home contests this weekend when Northeastern Junior College comes to Landers Soccer Complex on Friday while Lamar Community College comes to Scottsbluff on Saturday. The women’s matches start at 1 p.m. both days with the men’s contests kicking it off at 3:30 p.m.

The women got behind early, trailing 4-0 after the first 13 minutes. But, the ladies didn’t stop fighting as they came back and score in the 21st minutes when Ariel Veliz took a pass from Stephanie Villagomez and scored to make it 4-1. Iowa Western led 7-1 at halftime.

The second half saw the Reivers score just three more goals as Dory Jenson made nine saves in net. Emily Villagomez also had six saves in net in the first half.

WNCC finished with just three shots in the contest compared to 30 for Iowa Western.

The men’s contest was similar to the women’s as Iowa Western had 29 shots compared to just two for the Cougars. The Reiver men led 4-0 at halftime, scoring their first goal 19 seconds into the match.

Iowa Western scored three more times in the second half. Owen Henderson made nine saves in net for the Cougars. Iowa Western had 14 corner kicks compared to just one for WNCC.
