A bill introduced by Bayard Sen. Steve Erdman aimed at keeping more jobs for Nebraskans has advanced in the Nebraska Legislature.

LB844 provides clarification for corn seed companies on how they go about soliciting bids for contract labor for roguing and detasseling.

The current law says that migrant, H-2A workers, may be used for farm labor only when there’s not sufficient workers who are willing and able to do the work.

Erdman says a 2019 report showed there more than 700 young Nebraskans who applied for detasseling jobs, but weren’t hired because seed companies hired H-2A workers instead of locals.

After about 5 minutes of discussion, lawmakers voted 36 to 0 to advance the bill to the next round of debate.
