Area Football Roundup: Gering, Scottsbluff and Bayard all week one winners
August 30th, 2024 | Traeton Harimon

Here’s a look at the results from our broadcasts Friday night:

GRAND ISLAND- The Scottsbluff Bearcats put any doubts about their team to rest this season by going on the road and knocking off Grand Island Northwest for a huge week one victory.

The Bearcats took the early lead, 7-0, in the first quarter before tacking on 17 more before the half and holding GINW to just six points in the first half. Those six would be all that Scottsbluff would allow, adding another touchdown in the third quarter en route to the, 31-6, victory over the Vikings.

Scottsbluff now turns their attention to their home opener next Friday at 7 p.m. against Lincoln Northwest, who are 0-1 after falling to Ralston, 44-0.

GERING- The Gering Bulldogs start the year 1-0 with a 34-14 victory over the Torrington Trailblazers.

Gering put up 21 points in the first quarter and allowed only seven to the Trailblazers at the same time. The Bulldogs then went silent offensively in the second but also did not allow Torrington to score either, heading to the half with a, 21-7, lead. The Trailblazers added their final touchdown in the third while Gering also put up 13 in the quarter as they picked up the big week one win, 34-14.

Gering now hit the road next week to take on Western Conference foe Mitchell at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 6. Mitchell picked up a blowout victory over Wheatland (WY), 53-6, to open the year.

BAYARD- In our first installment of the Area Game of the Week, the Bayard Tigers rallied in the closing seconds to complete the comeback over the Morrill Lions, winning 38-32.

The Tigers trailed by 10 entering the second half after Morrill’s Osiris Saucedo and QB TJ Munroe linked up for a 66-yard touchdown pass to open scoring in the first, followed by a Ryder Green 65-yard interception return touchdown, Green added another touchdown by punching in from three yards and the Lion’s first half scoring was capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Munroe to Wyler Fisher with 24 seconds remaining in the half. Morrill did not convert any of their first half two-point tries.

Bayard’s first half saw Jacob Carrizales scamper for a 39-yard rushing touchdown and a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nolan Dueker to Anderson Gaarder with 49 seconds left in the half. Bayard converted their second two-point try after the touchdown pass.

Morrill struck first in the third, with Munroe connecting with Ashwinn Pittman for another explosive play for the Lions, a 47-yard passing touchdown and converted on the two-point try to make it, 32-18.

Gaarder snagged another long touchdown pass from Dueker for their only touchdown of the third quarter, this time for 27 yards with Bayard converting the two-point try to make it, 32-24.

The fourth quarter was quiet for nearly seven minutes for the Tigers marched down and Dueker snuck in from three yards out before converting on the two-point try again, making it 32-30.

After a Morrill drive stalled with around two minutes to play, the Lions elected to punt and pinned Bayard deep in their own territory at the nine yard line with 1:52 to play.

The Tigers marched down the field with the key play being a third-down pass conversion from Dueker to Gaarder for 28 yards to keep the drive alive. Then a critical pass interference against Morrill put the Tigers deep in Lion territory, allowing Bayard’s Coy Armstrong to sprint in on a toss to the right side of the formation from Dueker from seven yards out to take the 38-32 lead after the two-point try was successful with less than 30 seconds to play. It was the first time Bayard had the lead all game.

Morrill got to within 19 yards of Bayard’s endzone on the following drive, but an incompletion as time expired ended the Lions chances and the Tigers picked up the 38-32 victory.

Bayard now heads to Kimball for a rare Saturday game next weekend, while Morrill welcomes Brady for their home opener.
