Calamus Reservoir — An extensive road construction project will begin Monday, July 15 at Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area and extend into the spring. Visitor access will be limited and phased during construction. Calamus Reservoir is located in the Sandhills, 6 miles NW of Burwell.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation says Paulsen’s, Inc. of Cozad is the contractor for the project. Visitors can expect campground closures and delays as some areas will be maintained with flaggers and pilot cars, and/or traffic signals.

Valley View Flat Campground and parts of Little York Point will be closed beginning July 15.

The project will include improvements to campground roadways and campsites, boat ramp parking areas, South Lake Road, Calamus State Fish Hatchery, and Virginia Smith Dam. Compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act will be addressed in the project.

Asphalt paving and guardrail improvements to a portion of the South Lake Road and across the Virginia Smith Dam are anticipated to occur in the fall of 2024.

Anticipated completion is June 2025.
