BROKEN BOW – District 43 Legislative candidates Tanya Storer and Tony Tangwall addressed a range of issues Wednesday as the Custer County media partnered on a candidate forum.

With regard to the tax issue, Storer spoke of the need to change the formula used to determine how much state aid schools receive to lessen their need to levy property taxes.

Tangwall has been a vocal supporter of the so-called EPIC Option, which would seek to eliminate all current state taxes and replace them with a consumption tax on a range of purchases. Storer opposes the EPIC proposal, saying it would take away local control over how tax dollars are allocated.

Throughout the forum Tangwall emphasized the need to reduce government regulations on a range of issues and give the private sector more latitude to handle things.

Storer spoke of the need to support rural nursing homes by improving the state’s Medicaid reimbursement rate and said child care needs to be more accessible in order to help with workforce recruitment.

Both candidates pitched themselves as the best option to protect the rights of individuals and represent the interests of rural Nebraskans in Lincoln.

The primary election will be held on May 14. As the only two candidates for the seat, Tangwall and Storer are both assured of advancing to the November general election.
