SEM comes up short in state semifinal

LINCOLN – A fourth quarter scoring drought sank Sumner-Eddyville-Miller Friday night as they fell to Maywood-Hayes Center 53-48 in a Class D2 semifinal.

The teams traded momentum throughout the game as Maywood-Hayes Center took a second quarter lead, only to see SEM close the gap to lead by two going into halftime.

It was the Mustangs’ turn to surge in front in the third quarter, but MHC was able to tie the game right at the end of the period.

The Wolves then opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0 as turnovers plagued SEM. The Mustangs closed the gap to two points with a minute to go, but MHC fended them off for the victory.

Jerry Ingison paced Maywood-Hayes Center with 21 points and ten rebounds. Haydn Farr added 13 points.

Jace Rosentreader led SEM with 16 points while Colt Schroeder scored 11.

Maywood-Hayes Center will face Shelton Saturday for the Class D2 championship. SEM will play Wynot Saturday afternoon in the third place game. Tipoff will be at 3 p.m. on KBEAR 92.3.
